If you’re feeling stressed about the monster that is the recruiting process, we have good news for you. No matter what team you end up playing for, college baseball is FUN. So take a moment to smile and look forward to some of the best years of your life. Here’s a list of the top 5 funnest things about playing college baseball.
#5. Hotel Stays. If you play high school baseball, then you know tournament season is the best because you get to stay in a hotel overnight with all of your boys. In college, that’s every other weekend. The proccess is typically the same. There’s a curfew and you have to wake up early for breakfast, but somewhere in between all the mundane tasks, there’s always room for a good laugh or two. Just don’t do anything stupid. Running sprints in a hotel parking lot in the middle of the night is not that fun.
#4. Summer ball. Not every college player chooses to play summer ball, but if you have the opportunity to do so, we recommend taking it. If you’re in the right league, summer ball can feel pretty much like Minor League Baseball. You get to stay with a host family (hopefully one that cooks) and spend the entire summer eating sleeping and breathing baseball. Hot days and long bus rides are the last thing on your mind when you’re living the dream, even if it is just temporary. Not to mention, you get to meet a whole new group of teammates and coaches.
#3. Rain delays. If these weren’t so rare, they might be in the number one spot. During a rain delay, both teams are forced into their respective dugouts until the rain subsides. Imagine 40 guys crammed in a dugout with nothing to do. This is where the creativity begins. We’ve seen everything from drawing tic tac toe on a baseball and throwing it back and forth from each dugout, to jousting at home plate, yes jousting, to the classic upside down man. Just look up “Roger McDowell upside down,” and you’ll understand how rain delays could be the funnest and perhaps the funniest 30 minutes of your season.
#2. Alumni game. Okay we’ll admit, the alumni game is exponentially more fun for the alumni than it is for the current players. So, let that serve as motivation for you to finish your studies and graduate. The alumni game, for many of us, is the only time we get to reconnect with our old comrades. It’s always a great experience stepping onto the field with your boys and then getting destroyed by the active team. Catching up and watching your friends grow up with you is a priceless gift that the alumni game provides once a year. Coach Matt Piker, of Our Lady of the Lake University, has done a remarkable job with his program’s alumni affairs. At OLLU, alumni get together for the game in the morning, and then rejoin for drinks in the evening, making new memories to joke about the following year.
#1. Off the field memories. If you’ve played college baseball, and you’ve read up to this point, you knew that this one had to be first. The things that happen outside of games and practice, are the ones you’ll be laughing about for years to come. Unfortunately, it’s not exactly appropriate to mention them in great detail. Here’s what we’ll say: When you show up to college, day one, you are automatically friends with 40 other guys. From class, to practice, to late night fun, you do everything with your team. The memories you make with your team throughout your college years will be some of the funnest you’ll ever have. If you find yourself on a college roster one day, embrace those moments.
